I believe the internet became significantly worse when tech barriers for entry were lowered and the gibbering masses logged on. It's why Mastodon is so much calmer than Bluesky. The insignificant extra step to sign up is too much user friction for all the shouty ex-twitterites.

I've started posting on LinkedIn all the unconstitutional shit Trump and Musk are doing to undermine the security and integrity of our government. Mainly because that crowd needs to hear it most. It's incredible how many people in the infosec space are still defending the actions of DOGE and its dear leader(s). And they're not all crypto bros and AI peddlers; we're talking about people in some pretty important roles, tech-wise.

But at least when they reply with the inevitable "stay in your lane" or "I used to like you when you stayed out of politics," they are on record as complicit and totally okay with what is going on.

If the channel tunnel hadn't been built and someone proposed it now. It would be shouted down by the Brexit muppets and never happen.

What we need: lots of people, including individuals, small voluntary organisations, and small businesses, running online services using Free software, on a small scale, with decent export/import options

What the UK’s Online Safety Act encourages: people to throw in the towel and switch to a hosted/centralised service run by a rich, well-lawyered company, which can take on the risk and burden of compliance

The thing with obstructing those DOGE incels is it wouldn't be some massively brave sacrifice for a sysadmin/dev who slowed them down with clever, plausibly-bureaucratic/-accidental measures; you'd get fired then walk into a more fun job with people who love what you did. No one's having to stand in front of a tank.

One of my #COVID19 posts on #LinkedIn was removed for misinformation. Apparently, sharing Federal Reserve data and a link to 1,600 studies on COVID risks is now misinformation! (What really pisses me off is that I asked for a review of the decision, and it took seconds for them to confirm they won't restore my post.) So, now I'm boycotting LinkedIn for a while. If they want to go the way of Twitter/X, then they'll do so without my content driving engagement and ad views.

So we can now write emails using AI and have incoming emails summarised by using AI. Just how fucking lazy do we want people to be?! It's almost like we want forthcoming generations to be illiterate.

Hello EU people:

There is an EU citizen petition to ban the use of "conversion therapy" on LGBTQ+ folks (i.e., trying to de-LGBTQ us— a process often described as "torture"). If you're interested, you can sign it here:

eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/#/

Please especially take note if you are a national of Spain, Slovenia, Belgium, or the Netherlands; the petition needs about 5x as many votes as it has now, but also needs to hit a threshold in four additional countries, and those are the four closest.

If the federal government is not following the law, maybe it's time for states to pass laws ordering companies and individuals to no longer remit taxes to the IRS and just do things at a state level.

Someone should build an open-all-seasons hunting park somewhere. Fill it with lions, cheetahs, elephants, etc. And then airdrop some naked, unarmed humans in for the animals to hunt.

Something said by a conservative acquaintance: “Making the Palestinians leave Gaza isn’t genocide, it’s basically the same thing we did when we put the Native Americans on reservations”

Dude, you’re so close.

As the American empire enters its decline and fall, don't forget to write down your recollections on paper, so that there are references for a historian centuries hence to produce a multi-volume work on the period before dying after an operation on an absurdly swollen testicle.
