Which is why we should be very careful that we don't poison wells, and why "move fast and poison wells" is bad advice.

When someone poisons the well, whether through malice, greed or ignorance, it's poisoned for everyone, and can't easily be unpoisoned. That's sort of the thing with wells and poisoning.
