I spent the last 6 years building advanced security assessment capabilities around hardware/IoT, industrial, marine OT, and x86 platforms. Before that I spent 5 years as a pentester. I excel at weird and novel stuff with no template.

The UK online safety act, giving protection from non UK websites.

A group of 20-somethings with names like "Big Balls" gain unauthorized access to your servers, delete data, take your website down, and now you can't serve your customers and your organization goes belly up unless you pay money to a mafia boss.

Sounds a lot like ransomware, doesn't it? When your government starts imitating ransomware playbooks, it's a four-alarm fire. At least in theory one can negotiate with ransomware actors.

An Incel and Excel: both great at falsely assuming something is a date.

I believe the internet became significantly worse when tech barriers for entry were lowered and the gibbering masses logged on. It's why Mastodon is so much calmer than Bluesky. The insignificant extra step to sign up is too much user friction for all the shouty ex-twitterites.

So be it.

I've started posting on LinkedIn all the unconstitutional shit Trump and Musk are doing to undermine the security and integrity of our government. Mainly because that crowd needs to hear it most. It's incredible how many people in the infosec space are still defending the actions of DOGE and its dear leader(s). And they're not all crypto bros and AI peddlers; we're talking about people in some pretty important roles, tech-wise.

But at least when they reply with the inevitable "stay in your lane" or "I used to like you when you stayed out of politics," they are on record as complicit and totally okay with what is going on.

If the channel tunnel hadn't been built and someone proposed it now. It would be shouted down by the Brexit muppets and never happen.

What we need: lots of people, including individuals, small voluntary organisations, and small businesses, running online services using Free software, on a small scale, with decent export/import options

What the UK’s Online Safety Act encourages: people to throw in the towel and switch to a hosted/centralised service run by a rich, well-lawyered company, which can take on the risk and burden of compliance
