Yesterday, the thing I hoped wouldn't happen but which I have been working to prepare for happening for three years as part of Trans Rescue, happened. Trump began the process of erasing trans people in the USA.
Where this ends we don't know. But reading the executive orders, they're following a very 1930s path. Remove documentation, make it difficult to work, erase fron society, eliminate. It took several years from Hitler taking power to the Final Solution, and they started like this.
My apologies, if you followed me for random hacks to bits of junk, and pithy tech commentary, you're going to see another side of my life for a while.

This is a thread for happy, joyful things
Today is going to be rubbish for quite a lot of people, especially in the USA.
Why not share something that makes you feel happy or joyful?
It doesn't have to be deep or artistic. Just something - anything - that makes you smile.
<sysadmin stuff>
The AWS SDK for S3 suddenly stopped working for my non-AWS object stores (DigitalOcean, R2, etc)...and I thought I was losing my mind.
Well, looks like AWS decided to stop allowing others to leverage/freeload their software for use on competing services.
Understandable-ish, but doing it suddenly, know that stuff would break - on top of AWS blatantly making bank on services based on OSS software - well, that makes for some very bad karma.
Hahaha, just remembered another photo from there. Fun with interesting rocks!
I've received 5 VC offers "to chat" regarding Pixelfed in the past few days.
Not for sale.
Pixelfed belongs to the people.
I'd rather be broke and true to my beliefs, than sell out.
That's why I'm organizing a Kickstarter to fund the ethical development of Pixelfed, Loops and more.
It's time that someone stood up to them, instead of joining them.
Are you with me?

i was editing sculpture photos earlier, and i was wondering why. why i was bothering. the world is burning, people and animals and trees are dying, we're all trying not to drown in despair. why am i making sculptures and bothering to make sure their photos are accurate and why do i care?
and then i realised that it's the caring that makes us human. it's the creating and the trying to make the world better and more beautiful that will save what's left, if anything will. and they're what will save us too.
so to all of you, i just want to say please keep doing what you're doing. please keep making things and trying and putting whatever it is that makes you you into the world. we all need it. and we all need you.
"There’s the phrase, “Keep your eye on the doughnut and not the hole.” Worrying about where “up” is — that’s the hole and not the doughnut. The thing is, if you get an idea that you love and you want to realize it, then the trip of realizing it should be joyful and the result should be joyful. Happiness is not a new car; it’s the doing of the work. If you like the doing, the result will be a joy."
