Most people look under the bonnet when their car breaks down, yet most people haven't a clue what they are looking at. It's a performative action of no benefit whatsoever.

@anon_opin I know what I'm looking at under the bonnet, and can accurately describe what the majority of the parts really do.
on rare occasions I can even tell you what some of them did.
real-world though, unless I'm lucky enough to have the right bits/fluids/tools handy, it's just to let other road-users know that the automobile is no longer mobile and imminently will not be auto either
