People who forget to turn on their car headlights when driving after 4pm in winter months should be arrested and lose their licence.

@anon_opin The problem is several things: Manufacturers removed the connection between the dashboard display light and the headlights. So many people are not reminded to turn them on. The EU & others decided 'running lights' were a good idea (I have more on why they aren't), so people often think that they don't need to put them on, despite it not turning on the tail-lights. Manufacturers started putting automatic headlights on some cars, but the automation works on light level, not visibility.

@UkeleleEric @anon_opin daylight running lights should also by default have a rear light showing as well. they are bright enough (though way less directional) at night for drivers to be able to see in front of their car, the interior dashboard being default-lit too leads to assumptions that the headlight must be on. having a rear light in the cluster too (possibly labelled "if you see this in the dark, the driver is confused and/or distracted") would close that safety loop nicely.
