I am still not comfortable opening Word or any other documents online in a browser. it was clunky, buggy and slow when they first introduced this and it is not much better now and I distrust using a browser for editing Word files.
Downloading the file to work on locally seems to be something the vendors are not keen to make easy so I guess working online will probably be the future of editing Word files.
If you want to be blocked simply tell me about alternatives to using MS Office.

@bleepbloop have you tried just deleting the documents instead? after a while people leave you alone about them...
for alternative software I suggest vlc and a nice movie instead :)
