Conclusion: It was two of them, and the noise is entirely down to case resonance with those specific drive models vibrations. Absolutely wild.

Also the quietest 8TB drive that WD sell gets WAY NOISIER when you turn it on its side.

@jonty not being silly - tried rotating which side is down? some of my older drives seem to chug less loudly with the arm motor on top
case/caddies permitting, obviously.
also worth trying small adhesive foam pads in the middle of the metal face as a damper
