@da_667 @SwiftOnSecurity it's not just that they're LED headlights, it's that the vehicles got taller so the headlights are more directly in your eyes, *and* because regulators that limit headlight brightness picked radiometric units rather than photometric, so by going cold white they create much higher apparent brightness while staying at the same limit due to how your eyes perceive it. and at the same time the CRI/CFI are total ass, so it's piercing as fuck.
@da_667 @SwiftOnSecurity theoretically remote SLD/LEP headlights are a smart idea because you have a laser source coupled through fiber into a lightweight phosphor plate in the headlight reflector, which means you can move them in all sorts of directions very easily for adaptive headlight positioning (including dipping when the vehicle goes over a speedbump), but the existing implementations are like "CRI: 40, CT: 9000K, luminosity: YES, ALL OF IT" and it kinda sucks.
@gsuberland @da_667 @SwiftOnSecurity also dirt/moisture on the outside of the headlight housing causes massive glare. old cars, dirty headlights were dimmer. new cars, dirty headlights are just as bright but set to broadcast mode :(
